Two heavyweights and the market only has Texas a field goal shy of even, about 59 percent on the moneyline once you strip the juice. In a game this tight I want the side holding the half point under the key number of 3, and that's Ohio State plus 2.5. I'm not predicting a blowout either way, I'm just buying the hook.

Ohio State and Texas both recruit elite defensive linemen, and in a game this big early in the year I trust the front sevens more than the offenses. Neither staff will want to give the other short fields, so I expect conservative play-calling, plenty of field goals and a premium on avoiding turnovers. At 50.5, I like the under in a heavyweight fight that turns on line play.

Alabama on the road in an SEC game, laying 9.5, and the moneyline has Kentucky near 25 percent to win outright. That spread sits two and a half points past the key number of 7, which is a lot of cushion to hand a home dog in a conference game. I'll take the points and let the favorite prove it can cover a number that big away from home.

A border rivalry on the road, and Missouri is laying 4 when the moneyline says roughly two in three to win. In this kind of game a 3-point finish is the most common single result, and plus 4 covers that with a point to spare. Rivalry games tend to stay closer than they look on paper, so I'll take Kansas and the extra point.

The market prices Oklahoma at roughly 67 percent to win outright off the -230, and asks them to cover 5.5 on the road. A 43.5 total implies a low-possession game where each point carries more weight, so 5.5 is worth more here than in a shootout. I estimate Michigan covers about 55 percent of the time against a 52.4 percent breakeven, a modest gap that comes from structure rather than any story about either team.

When two programs that build their identity around the line of scrimmage meet in September, I expect a game decided in the trenches, not on the scoreboard. Michigan at home will want to shorten the game with the run, and Oklahoma's defensive front is built to make that a grind. A total of 43.5 is already low, but I see long drives, field-position punts and red-zone stalls keeping it under.

Half the desk is camped on Michigan plus the points or the under, and when my colleagues all lean the same way I head for the door marked opposite. Laying 5.5 on the road feels uncomfortable, and uncomfortable is usually where the value hides. I'll take Oklahoma and let everyone else enjoy the cozy home dog story.

Minnesota at home is priced as a coin flip, with -110 on both moneylines, which means the market rates Mississippi State a few points better on a neutral field. Two weeks of data is too small a sample to justify that confidence, and I would rather take the home team plus a point and a half than trust an early read. My estimate is around 54 percent to cover against the 52.4 percent breakeven, a small edge sized as such.

Spreads above 50 points are where the model of a full-strength margin breaks down, because starters sit, clocks run and the favorite stops pressing long before the final whistle. Florida may well dominate, but the line has to be cleared, not just approached, and the second half of these games tends to compress margins. I put Campbell plus 51.5 near 54 percent against a 52.4 percent breakeven, an edge that rests on game-management dynamics rather than any opinion about Campbell.

Twelve and a half is a lot of points to lay on the road against a Georgia Tech program that plays physical, ball-control football at home. If the Yellow Jackets can lean on their run game and win on early downs, they shrink the number of possessions, and fewer possessions make a two-score cushion hard to cover. I respect Tennessee's tempo, but I'll take the home side and the points in a game I expect to stay inside the margin.

A late kickoff, a big home favorite, and nearly two touchdowns for an SEC team that nobody wants to be seen holding. Arkansas is the ugly dog in this one, and ugly dogs at double digits are my favorite kind of company. I'll take the 13.5 and let Utah prove it can pull away in the dark.

Forty and a half is a number built on a logo, not a matchup, and the crowd will lay it all day because Georgia is Georgia. Blowouts like this tend to get the starters a nap and the backups a long afternoon, which means a backdoor cover is always on the table. Western Kentucky plus the mountain of points is the kind of ticket nobody brags about, which is exactly why I like it.
